A Self-Drive Itinerary Around Rarotonga

One of the best things about car hire in Rarotonga is how easy it is to turn a simple island drive into a full day of exploring. Start in Avarua, where you can browse the Punanga Nui Market if you are travelling on a Saturday morning, then follow the main road clockwise around the island. The market is a good place to pick up local produce, food, crafts and souvenirs before setting off. From there, your Rarotonga car rental gives you the freedom to stop whenever something along the road catches your attention.

Continue east towards Matavera and Avana, where Avana Lookout makes a worthwhile stop before you reach Muri. Spend some time at Muri Beach, whether that means walking beside the lagoon, stopping for lunch or simply enjoying the view, then continue south to Tikioki Beach. Muri is on Rarotonga’s south-eastern side and is a popular area for lagoon activities, cafés and restaurants. With your own Rarotonga cars or scooter, there is no need to rush between stops or follow a fixed tour schedule.

Keep following the coastal road around the southern and western sides of the island, leaving time for roadside stalls, beaches and any unexpected stops along the way. Black Rock is one of the recognised stops on Cook Islands Tourism’s suggested island drive, and nearby Nikao Beach is another easy place to spend some time by the water before returning towards Avarua. When comparing Rarotonga rentals, having your own vehicle is especially useful for a day like this because you can decide how long to stay at each location. The entire circuit may only take around 45 minutes without stopping, but a self-drive day is much better when you give yourself several hours to explore.

There is no need to treat this route as a strict checklist. Part of the appeal of car hire on Rarotonga is being able to pull over for a beach, grab something to eat, browse a roadside stall or revisit somewhere you enjoyed earlier in your holiday. Remember to drive on the left and follow the posted limits, including the 30 km/h maximum in Avarua, Muri Beach and school zones and the 50 km/h maximum elsewhere. Take your time, enjoy the drive and let the island set the pace.
